Better Building Partnership Climate Commitment

British Land is a founding signatory, committed to transitioning to a net zero carbon portfolio, implementing a climate resilience strategy and detailed disclosure of climate performance, risk and opportunities.

We support the BBP’s definition of climate resilience: "A climate-resilient business has a strategy in place to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change by becoming 'net zero' carbon before 2050; adapt to operating in a world in which climate-driven disruption is more frequent and severe; and disclose climate related information to investors, regulators and other stakeholders in a useful and timely way."

Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)

Our 2030 targets to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 51% and Scope 3 emissions by 55% per sqm of net lettable area, against our FY20 baseline, were approved by SBTi in 2021. We submitted new, long term science-based targets to the SBTi for validation in 2026, aligned with a 1.5°C climate scenario. These commit us to reducing operational carbon intensity by 97% by 2040 and absolute corporate emissions (including embodied carbon and supply chain) by 90% by 2050, against our FY24 baseline. Once validated, the new targets will replace our SBTi-validated targets to 2030.
