Pioneering businesses need sustainable, future-ready spaces. So we integrate carbon-intelligent decision-making into the design and operation of our campuses. This saves our customers on their energy bills and cuts their carbon emissions. To celebrate what’s been achieved so far and inspire others to join us, we created an interactive installation that toured our campuses from July to September 2025. During the tour, we spoke with some of our customers, listen to their insights below.

We have collaborated with Real World Visuals, data visualisation specialists, to produce this installation showcasing our ongoing commitment to improving the sustainability of our workspaces. Across our buildings, we continuously improve processes and integrate new technologies to reduce our customers’ energy consumption. In turn, this lowers their energy bills and reduces carbon emissions. We also share valuable workspace data and insights to support their sustainability reporting and goals.

THE CHALLENGE

28% of global carbon emissions come from operational energy use in the built environment. So British Land is seeking to reduce our operational carbon intensity by 75% by 2030. Operational carbon is emitted as a result of the day-to-day operation of a building, such as heating, cooling, lighting, water use and waste.

Our Journey In Numbers

/

This data covers Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions, standardised to carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), across all office buildings managed by British Land. It is based on average grid emission factors, though we improve on this by procuring renewable energy.

Reducing carbon is an ongoing journey. Many of the savings achieved have only been possible thanks to the support of our customers – the people and businesses based on our campuses. In turn, this is helping our customers towards their climate goals and cutting their energy bills. We welcome further conversation with customers to optimise their spaces. Together, we can accelerate progress.

Optimise Your Workspace

If you’re based at a British Land campus – Broadgate, Paddington Central or Regent’s Place – contact our sustainability team or your building’s Technical Services Manager to find out more and explore what we can do together.

Working collaboratively, we can explore innovative ideas, optimise technology and lower operational costs. Let’s explore opportunities together.

Office operational carbon refers to the emissions produced through the day-to-day running of our buildings. By focusing on reducing these emissions, we’re working towards more sustainable workplaces and supporting our broader environmental objectives.

OUR JOURNEY AT OUR PLACES

All our office buildings have a decarbonisation pathway, identifying when and where we can improve energy efficiency both in customer spaces and communal areas. Here are some milestones that have contributed to our reduction in operational carbon emissions each year.
