5-star GRESB rating achieved
Expanding EV charging points across retail sites
72% of portfolio now rated EPC A or B
British Land has achieved a 5-star rating in the 2025 GRESB assessment for both standing investments and developments. This places British Land as the Global Sector Leader for Development and the highest diversified REIT in Europe for Standing Investments, with scores of 92/100 for standing assets and 100/100 for developments, the highest ratings British Land has achieved.
GRESB remains a robust, independent framework to assess the sustainable performance of real estate companies. It covers the full spectrum of ESG, rewarding both strategy and actual performance. Retaining 5 stars is further evidence of progress British Land is making against its ambitious 2030 Sustainability Strategy.
In addition, British Land has made significant progress in expanding its EV charging infrastructure, having exchanged or completed deals across nine retail assets, with a pipeline of an additional sixteen sites. This initiative not only supports the transition to low-carbon transport but also unlocks new income opportunities across the retail park portfolio, with no capital outlay for British Land.
British Land’s on-going investment in the environmental sustainability of its portfolio means that 72% of its assets are now rated EPC A or B by ERV, from 36% in 2022. This progress underscores the effectiveness of targeted interventions and its ability to deliver rapid, scalable improvements across its assets. British Land’s retrofit programme has now delivered 27 heat pumps helping achieve a 38% reduction in carbon intensity since 2020 and positioning the portfolio for continued strong demand for energy efficient workspaces.
Emma Cariaga Chief Operating Officer, at British Land, said: “These sustainability achievements across our portfolio signal our continued commitment to ESG excellence. It also recognises our focus over many years to lead the industry in low carbon development and the decarbonisation of our standing portfolio, having doubled the amount of assets which are now rated EPC A or B.”
“Together, these milestones demonstrate the commercial value of sustainability-led investment, through enhancing asset value and resilience and delivering new income streams.”
