Sustainability Committee

Our Sustainability Committee, which meets several times a year, acts as custodian for our sustainability strategy:

  • Reviewing performance and monitoring progress against targets and key initiatives.
  • Assessing emerging social, environmental and ethical issues to determine whether they can help us respond to some of the big questions our business and stakeholders face.
  • Considering social, environmental and ethical risks, and the mitigating actions that are in place.
  • Presenting any proposed changes in sustainability strategy to the Executive Committee for approval.

Our Sustainability Committee is Chaired by Chief Financial Officer, Lucinda Bell, and comprises representatives from across the business, including our sustainability team.

Embedding sustainability

Reflecting the importance we place on social and environmental matters, the annual incentive remuneration of Executive Directors is influenced by performance on four global sustainability indices: the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World and Europe, FTSE4Good and the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark.

For our performance on these indices, which cover a broad spectrum of activity across our business, see Sustainability Indices.

Our induction for new employees includes an introduction to our approach to sustainability, and we deliver all-employee briefings on sustainability. Our peer-led recognition programme ‘Hats Off’ for employees focuses on our company values and includes the Chairman’s Award for Citizenship. We also hold an annual awards ceremony to recognise the contributions from our supply chain towards achieving our sustainability goals, our Awards for Excellence.

Sustainability reporting

We have reported on our social and environmental performance since 2002. We report in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 core option guidelines, GRI Construction and Real Estate Sector Disclosures document, and the latest European Public Real Estate Association (EPRA) Best Practice Recommendations.

Selected key performance data has been independently assured under the ISAE 3000 standard since 2011, so stakeholders can be confident that we are reporting accurately on our most material issues.

We have participated in the CDP for nine years. We report on carbon in line with the World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard. Selected carbon data is assured under the ISAE 3410 standard.

We report on community investment in accordance with LBG guidelines.

We have achieved EPRA Sustainability Reporting Gold Awards four years running. We also won the IR Society Award for Integration of Sustainability Reporting 2015.
