Peacocks Shopping Centre offers 35,860m² of retail space on three trading levels around a central atrium. Completed in 1992, the scheme is the prime retail destination in the town. The team takes its corporate responsibilities seriously and continuously looks for ways to reduce the various environmental and social impacts a development of this size can have.
In March 2007 Peacocks was chosen as the location for the launch of a major climate change exhibition organised by Business in the Community and the British Council of Shopping Centres. The first of 12 such exhibitions, it was opened by HRH The Prince of Wales. During the time it was on display over 650,000 people visited the centre.
The management team has also been working with cleaning services suppliers, London Property Maintenance to improve environmental performance. All cleaners are now using microfibre mops and cloths to minimise the need for cleaning chemicals. They are re-using microfibre cloths and sourcing concentrated chemicals to reduce plastic waste by an estimated 90%. The cleaning contractors are monitoring carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles with the target of reducing emissions by 5%-8% per annum. This initiative was awarded a Green Apple for Environmental Best Practice in the 2006 awards.
