An integrated approach to corporate responsibility

Corporate responsibility helps in our development and management of sustainable, commercially viable properties that are attractive to occupiers, leading to better returns for our shareholders. Taking our corporate responsibilities seriously helps us to meet existing and potential regulatory requirements, and also protects and enhances our valuable reputation.

The Board regularly reviews risks to the business, including those arising from corporate responsibility issues. Peter Clarke, Executive Officer, chairs the Corporate Responsibility Committee, and reports to the Executive Committee and Board as necessary.

The Corporate Responsibility Committee , consisting of heads of department and senior representatives, takes direct responsibility for targets. This Committee also oversees working groups, each focusing on a key area, such as the supply chain.

In 2006 we continued to make progress on the seven focus areas of risk and opportunity agreed in 2005 following a two year consultation process involving shareholders, employees, occupiers, local communities, suppliers and experts. These focus areas will be reviewed again in 2007.

CR reporting

We have been publishing our annual CR Report since 2003, keeping our stakeholders up to date with our CR strategy and initiatives. In 2006, to integrate our CR reporting with our financial reporting we published our full CR Report online and printed a summary report which was included in the British Land Annual Report and Accounts 2007.

Policies and documents

Our approach to CR is underpinned by policies and documents including our CR Policy, Sustainability Brief for Developments, Biodiversity Programme, Waste Management Plan and Travel Plans.

Benchmarks and awards

In 2007 we won the Silver Jublilee Big Tick award for our long-term community engagement programme in West Euston.

Focus areas

We publish objectives and targets for each of our focus areas in our annual CR Report. The following year we report on progress against these targets. In 2007 we also identified Key Performance Indicators for each of our focus areas.
