CR in property management

Eastgate Shopping Centre, Basildon

Eastgate Shopping Centre has a range of stores, including leading department stores, high street names and specialist shops on over 70,000 m² of retail space. The management and their team have been involved in environmental and community initiatives for a number of years, improving performance and winning awards.

The Eastgate team is actively involved in community work, with more than 80% participating in charitable events in 2006, receiving paid time off to do so. In one initiative AS Level Business Management students from Beauchamps High School worked with Eastgate managers on marketing proposals. This was so successful that it is now a permanent part of the Beauchamps Business Management syllabus.

Each year the Eastgate team invests money in good causes and provides community groups with the use of Centre facilities. In 2006 they provided £75,000 to causes such as St Luke’s Hospice, the Vicky Bristow Appeal, Little Havens and The Royal British Legion.

Eastgate ShopMobility provides customers with the free use of equipment such as motorised scooters. This is supported by the Onsight initiative which provides a sighted guide shopping service for the visually impaired. Since 2005 the Centre has invested £14,000 to improve accessibility. This investment has helped secure Community Fund grants worth more than £160,000 over three years to further improve accessibility.

The team has introduced a number of initiatives to manage its carbon footprint by reducing energy use, increasing recycling and encouraging sustainable travel. In 2006 they installed a Reverse Vending Machine, which is currently crushing 1,000 aluminium and plastic units a week. In 2005 the team launched a Bikeability programme, providing communal bicycles for use by employees for getting to and from work.

As part of our Water Management Plan the refurbishment of Eastgate includes water efficient technologies, such as water harvesting and flow controlled taps in the toilet facilities.

The team has been involved in various biodiversity initiatives. For instance in 2006 a Young Enterprise Company produced and sold 60 bird boxes from a stall in the Centre. These were then placed in Basildon parks in conjunction with Essex Wildlife Trust. The team also supported a town centre bird watch scheme in conjunction with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
