Broadgate is the premier City of London office estate. It consists of 15 office buildings and a site where we are developing 201 Bishopsgate and The Broadgate Tower. When these are completed there will be 445,900m² of premium office space. Broadgate is managed by Broadgate Estates, a wholly owned subsidiary of British Land.
The Broadgate Environmental Working Group was established in 2004 as part of our efforts to develop stronger relationships with occupiers and improve waste management and energy efficiency at Broadgate. It consists of representatives from British Land, Broadgate Estates and major occupiers, including Baring Asset Management, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Henderson Global Investors, Herbert Smith, Royal Bank of Scotland and UBS. Initiatives have helped to increase recycling from 40% in 2005 to 46% in 2006, with further targets set to recycle over 50% of all waste by 2007. They have also helped to encourage energy efficiency, with all members of the Working Group adopting a Carbon Emission Reduction Charter in 2006.
Broadgate Estates management team and employees are involved in volunteering initiatives in their own time as well as during working hours. In 2006 they supported the Runnymede Trust in preparing for and managing an office move. This local research trust acts as a bridge-builder between various minority ethnic communities and policy makers. The Trust particularly valued the Broadgate team’s support in handling facilities management issues for the new building, archiving records and updating health and safety policies and practices.
Employees, occupiers and visitors have been enjoying events in the Broadgate Arena for a number of years. In 2006 these included a three-day series of equestrian events at lunchtime, with performances from a Jive Pony Display team and a dressage display from a top ranked rider, Paul Hayler. A demonstration from the K9 Freestyle Dog Dancing team involved dogs and handlers performing to their chosen music. The performers included the duo who won the 2006 Crufts Freestyle competition.
During the winter Broadgate occupiers and local schools can use the outdoor ice rink free of charge.
“I would like to say a big special thank you to you for a free one hour skating, and it was fantastic, brilliant and amazing.”
“Your ice rink was my best rink ever. Outside skating is the best.”
“I really enjoyed the trip and even though at the end every single bone in my body was aching, it didn’t stop me from trying and trying again.”
