We offer all our employees volunteering opportunities and encourage the management teams at our properties around the UK to get involved in local initiatives.
In 2007 our Head Office team spent almost 400 hours volunteering. 26% were involved in volunteering initiatives in 2007/08. In November a team of British Land volunteers helped to dig, clear and prune shrubs in a meadow at Waterlow Park in Camden. Set on a hillside with panoramic views over London, the park was left to the public by Sir Sydney Waterlow in 1889 as a ‘garden for the gardenless’. It has ponds on three levels, tree lined walkways, mature shrub beds and herbaceous borders, ornamental bedding, lawns, tennis courts and a small playground. The park is home to much wildlife, including foxes and bats. It also has an aviary which is used as an injured animal recovery centre. All our volunteers reported that they felt more positive about the company following their volunteer involvement. 85% of volunteers at Waterlow Park found the volunteering day to be an effective team building exercise.
It was great to get to know other people in the company. Overall, as a team we made a significant improvement to that area of the Park. It was very rewarding to see the changes over the course of the day - and thoroughly enjoyable!

In 2007 Meadowhall Shopping Centre volunteers converted a storage room at local Phillimore Primary School into a comfortable room for staff to work with children and their families on social issues including low self esteem, behavioural issues and family problems. Over the course of a week, joiners, painters, technical experts and other volunteers from Meadowhall painted and carpeted the room, repaired a broken window, plastered the ceiling and installed new lighting and heating. As well as providing a new quiet room for school staff to handle problems in a non confrontational way, it brought staff together from various areas of Meadowhall to provide a solution within a tight timescale.
We’re delighted with our new room and are extremely grateful to Meadowhall staff for all their hard work. It’s great to see something that previously wasn’t utilised put to good use and we now have somewhere welcoming that we can go when we need to spend quiet time with parents, carers or pupils.
