In 2007 St Stephen’s Shopping Centre in Kingston-upon-Hull became the first UK shopping centre to work with The Prince’s Trust and a range of retailers to offer disadvantaged young people the chance to participate in the Get into Retail job scheme. Seven St Stephen’s retailers provided 16 work placements as part of The Trust’s intensive three week programme, which culminated in job interviews. All learners gained Level 2 Health and Safety qualifications and five learners went on to get jobs. The 16 young people will continue to be supported by The Prince’s Trust for a further six months. The project has been supported by regional development agency Yorkshire Forward and is now a national model for The Prince’s Trust for its work in other regeneration areas.
Thank you and your colleagues at St Stephen’s in Hull for your immense contribution to the recent ‘Get into Retail’ programme. As a direct result of your hard work and commitment to the programme, and to the young people involved, this initiative was a resounding success… The relationship which our organisations have established with each other is a shining example of how successful partnerships can have a real and lasting impact on communities. The combination of the private, public and voluntary sector is a powerful one, and your involvement in this has made success happen.
Peter Branson, Regional Director, The Prince’s Trust Yorkshire and The Humber.
In 2007 over 70 young people participated in Be the Boss, Young Managers and Retail Academy courses at Broughton, New Mersey and Crown Point North Shopping Parks. Started in 2002, the Young Managers course is now a three day programme designed to introduce work-based skills such as problem solving, teamwork and communications to Year 9 pupils. Students participating in Be the Boss and Retail Academy are treated as potential managers, building their self esteem and sense of achievement. The programme has been developed in partnership with New Heys Business and Enterprise College, St Benedict’s Catholic College, St David’s High School and St Thomas More Secondary School. It has been awarded the Recognition of Quality Award by the New Heys College Business Education Links Team and has brought positive publicity, enhancing the reputation of the shopping parks within the local community.
It fits perfectly into our ethos of being more outward looking in our approach. The shopping park team represent a breath of fresh air to the school, and we are already being rewarded by the very positive impression this initiative is having throughout the school.
Daria Kuczaj, Head of Year 9, St Thomas More Secondary School
