Renewable energy uses natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geo-thermal heat, which are naturally replenished. Renewable energy technologies include solar power, wind power and hydro-electricity.
We are working with our local property management teams to source more green power from the National Grid and install renewable energy sources at our properties. In 2007/08 75% of electricity used in the areas of our properties we have direct management control over was from Climate Change Levy exempt sources, representing 14,683 tonnes of carbon emissions. We are currently reviewing opportunities to install wind turbines at several of our shopping parks including Birstall, Fort Kinnaird, Glasgow Fort and Teesside. The proposed wind turbine at Fort Kinnaird would generate an estimated 25,000 kWh of renewable electricity each year, reducing carbon emissions by 15%. Plans for an extension to Fort Kinnaird also include fitting solar panels to heat water for the new washroom facilities.
We had felt in the past that we were going it alone, but this is totally different now. British Land have engaged with us directly and encouraged the whole of the Broadgate community to act as a group. We feel British Land is a like-minded organisation to ours. They took a lead and it is now filtering into a partnership approach and gathering momentum.

Guided by our Sustainability Brief, our development project teams have been working to incorporate renewable energy sources into our developments since 2004. Plans for our Osnaburgh Street development include 150m2 of photovoltaic panels providing solar power for heating. All energy used at Ropemaker for heating water and space will come from renewable sources, representing 20% of total energy use and reducing associated carbon emissions by 10%.
100% green electricity for Triton Square, 338 Euston Road and 350 Euston Road in Regent's Place since 2005.
100% green electricity for the areas of properties we manage at Broadgate since 2006.
100% green electricity for the common areas at Meadowhall Shopping Centre since 2005.
