Each summer Triton Square in Regent’s Place hosts a series of lunchtime events for occupiers’ employees, local people and other visitors. This year the Events Committee, comprising occupiers, local people and representatives from British Land and Broadgate Estates, arranged a comprehensive programme. The 2007 events included a Flamenco music and dance display, a jazz session by the Natalie Williams trio, a West Indian steel band trio, a Salsa show and an African performance with drumming, vocal harmony and dance. In July Belle Erskine sang sets of pop and disco, and Fire and Rain performed pop and rock classics from bands such as the Rolling Stones, The Beatles and The Blues Brothers. In August Nick Shankland and a group of musicians performed swing numbers including ‘New York, New York’, and ‘Lets Call the Whole Thing Off’. On 10th August 30 people also enjoyed a relaxing five minute head, hand and shoulder massage from specialists while a DJ and percussionist performed Ibiza style urban grooves, live in the square.
In 2007 the Broadgate Events Team provided the Broadgate Circle free of charge to celebrate 25 years of the Barbican. The celebration included 60 hours of performances that were free to all, with live music and screenings of films culminating in the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. In September 2007 the History of Rugby celebration at Broadgate raised £50,000 for Cancer Research UK. The three week programme included a museum of rugby memorabilia, a passing and kicking competition, giveaways, auctions, gala functions and a corporate touch rugby competition in which more than 40 teams participated. The highlight of the celebration was the Legends Luncheon, attended by 150 people, including occupiers’ employees and rugby celebrities from England, Scotland, Wales and Australia.
The successful fundraising was attributed to the strong support of the many thousands of Broadgate occupiers’ employees who spent their lunch breaks enjoying the events and contributing to a great cause. £50,000 was raised for Cancer Research UK and specifically the Breast Cancer unit.
