In 2007 the team at the Peacocks Centre worked with Surrey Education Business Partnership and local secondary schools on Business Games, Foreign Language Workshops and Town Planning exercises. They mentored over 300 Year 10 and 11 students from Bishop David Brown, Winston Churchill and Jubilee High schools, providing an insight into the world of work and hosted mock interviews followed by constructive, personalised feedback.
In 2007 Parkgate Shopping joined a scheme launched by Rotherham Ready to help local children to develop enterprise skills. Parkgate provided a £150 loan to a class of pupils at Hilltop Special School. Each pupil used an initial investment of £5 to launch their business within school. They then reviewed their profits and presented their findings to the class. This unusual programme provides a link between school and the world of work, encouraging business skills, confidence and creativity.
In 2007 the team at Teesside Shopping Park worked on climate change initiatives with teachers and children from local Norton Primary School. 30 children designed a poster highlighting their thoughts on saving the environment or the benefits of recycling. All of the children received a WHSmith goody bag and the three winners, judged by the Mayor of Stockton, received Borders gift cards. In November the children visited the Park with teachers and some parents to plant daffodil and tulip bulbs in a specially prepared area. The flowers will encourage bees and other insect life and the children returned to the Park in the spring to see how the bulbs had grown. The school has now set up an ongoing environmental study group.
The children thoroughly enjoyed their visits to Teesside Park, especially to see their posters displayed in the new information centre for all the visitors to see, in getting their hands dirty planting some flower bulbs, and looking around the entire site to see the wealth of important wildlife that can be found around the busy shops. The children can now take great pride in their work, and can see the difference they individually made each spring as the new flowers add a splash of colour to the area.
