In 2007 573 people went through the National Skills Academy for Construction at 201 Bishopsgate and Broadgate Tower. 17 people started working towards National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) Level 2 and three towards Level 3 following the 2006 launch of the Academy at 201 Bishopsgate. The Academy has brought learning on-site for the whole team as well as new entrants. Several organisations interested in the model visited the site in 2007, including Kent County Council, Kent and Medway Learning and Skills Council and the South East Development Agency, as well as other potential Academy members such as Kings Cross Central.
In 2007 Bovis Lend Lease supported 30 local people at our 201 Bishopsgate and Broadgate Tower development through the BeOnsite local recruitment and training scheme. The successful candidates benefited from a five week full-time training programme in employability skills, developed in partnership with employers and London Construction Colleges. The programme was delivered by Lewisham College, with the support of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians, and the Union Learning Fund. 30 people benefited from English for Speakers of Other Languages training, eight from IT training and eight from a Key Skills course. 125 people took Construction Safety Certification Scheme tests and a further 44 attended training. 46 people attended construction taster days and 28 attended demolition operatives taster days.
I really do want to progress and this is my chance. Everyone wants certificates these days but so few companies offer recognised training. I know I can benefit from this and I hope I can inspire others to do the same.

The BeOnsite team also developed a customised training programme for Swift Horsman, the fit-out contractors, around their ‘Podwall’ prefabricated modular walling system. 14 candidates completed a five week, full time training programme provided by Skill Gain, gaining a BTEC Foundation in Construction Certificate. All trainees were then taken on by Swift Horsman at its Stonyhills factory and new training centre where they are working towards their NVQ Level 1. Skill Gain, Construction Skills and Ed Excel are now developing a new NVQ suited to the work that fit-out contractors require their employees to do.
In December BeOnsite launched a Demolition Operatives Training Course, following discussions with the National Federation of Demolition Contractors and Construction Skills. 15 trainees undertook a three day asbestos removal course and a four day first aid course with St John Ambulance. They then started a five week programme during which they carried out a ‘soft strip’ of a building provided by the Corporation of the City of London, in preparation for its refurbishment. They also completed building surveys, risk assessments and method statements, before starting full time employment on-site. The BeOnsite team is also working with South Bank University to develop a Building Services Operatives course.
6% of construction employment was drawn from the local community in 2007/08.
Our Osnaburgh Street development shares the training facilities provided by BeOnsite and Kings Cross Working at 201 Bishopsgate and The Broadgate Tower.
Targets for the North East Quarter in Regent's Place include recruiting at least 10% of construction workers from the local Borough of Camden
