Our approach to corporate responsibility

Building Together is our new way of looking at corporate responsibility, engaging with our stakeholders and managing our impact on the environment.

Building Together is the outcome of a review of our corporate responsibility activities, informed by expert opinion, stakeholder feedback and benchmarking.

The key messages from our stakeholders were that they trust us and feel that there is leadership from the top of the company but that we needed to do more to embed corporate responsibility within the business and improve strategic communication.

Independent benchmarking identified that our focus on stakeholder engagement was a strength and that our approach to reporting compared favourably with our peers. It also recommended changes to specific targets, and linking our Key Performance Indicators and targets more closely.

Building Together is about:

  • Building our business around our customers, ensuring that we deliver space to support their success and meet their changing occupational needs
  • Engaging with our staff, customers, suppliers and local communities, changing our behaviours and helping them to change theirs - much of what we can achieve can only be done in partnership
  • Setting high standards in everything that we do, because we believe that a responsible business is a sustainable business. Those high standards will maintain and enhance our reputation and the value of our exceptional long-term investments
  • Providing a simple, easy to understand set of objectives and targets, a roadmap for our efforts so that our people and stakeholders understand where we are going
  • Making sensible business decisions. Our efforts will be driven by our desire to add value. Costs and benefits will continue to drive investment decisions.

The four cornerstones of Building Together are:

  • Our use of resources: Because reducing energy and water use, and managing waste responsibly, reduces carbon emissions, generates financial savings and increases the attractiveness of our buildings to occupiers, as well as enabling us to manage our impact on the environment.
  • Our customers and us: Because building closer relationships with occupiers enables us to meet their changing business needs more successfully, manage our broader environmental impacts more effectively, and improve our long-term financial performance
  • Our communities and us: Because developing relationships with local communities and local authorities enhances our reputation, promotes sharing of objectives and resolution of issues, and enables us to develop and manage properties that meet local needs
  • Us and our suppliers: Because it is only by working closely with our people and our suppliers that we will be able to embed Building Together at all levels of our business and throughout our supply chain.
