The Biodiversity Programme

By enhancing local ecosystems our properties are more attractive places to work, live in and visit, and are thus more attractive to occupiers.

The British Land Biodiversity Programme, published in 2005, promotes the consideration of biodiversity at each stage of the property lifecycle. This helps us to protect and enhance habitats and species.

Through Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs) we plan, implement and record measures to manage and enhance biodiversity at our properties. We have developed three types of BAP: site-specific, urban generic and soft landscape generic.

  • Site-specific BAPs are for properties with varied habitat or species requirements. In 2006 site-specific BAPs were implemented for Teesside Shopping Park and Regent’s Place and launched for Meadowhall Shopping Centre and Blythe Valley Park.
  • The Urban Generic BAP is for properties with the type of hard landscape that is often associated with urban areas. It contains generic measures for birds, bats, green and brown roof habitats, green walls and control of invasive species.
  • The Soft Landscape Generic BAP is for properties with some soft estate of planting and grass, for instance in rural areas, at the edge of cities or in industrial areas. It contains generic measures for birds, bats, invertebrate, grassland diversification and linkage habitats.

These Biodiversity Action Plans form the framework within which initiatives at properties can be taken forward.
