British Land undertakes in-depth stakeholder consultation on major developments. By consulting local people we aim to ensure that our developments meet their needs and have their support.
Since 2003 we have been consulting with local people on our plans for Canada Water in London’s Docklands. There have been over 200 community consultation sessions, including dedicated workshops, public open sessions, exhibitions, school tours, public meetings and focus groups. Consultation has also taken place with Government agencies, statutory consultees and many of Southwark Council’s departments. Feedback on the outline plans showed that there was a good level of support and led to changes being made to the plans, such as providing a dedicated toddlers’ play area, allowing for a larger public plaza, widening the pavement and providing additional cycle parking. In 2006 the Council granted outline planning permission for the first phase of regeneration. For more information visit www.canadawater-southwark.co.uk
Following two years of consultation with local community groups and other stakeholders, detailed planning permission was received for the Osnaburgh Street development at Regent’s Place in 2006. We are now working with the local community to manage the project to ensure minimal disruption to the people who live and work locally. Factors that are being considered include noise, dust and traffic issues. We have also been consulting with the local community and other stakeholders about proposals including offices, residential units and a new community arts centre in the north-east quadrant of the estate. In 2006 we displayed plans at the West Euston Community Festival and presented the development to the West Euston Partnership Planning Sub-Group. Following feedback there will be a larger performance space with increased seating in the extended Triton Square and the location of a new community One Stop Shop has been changed to give it more usability and a higher footfall. We are currently extending our outreach consultation programme to include more local schools and youth groups.
