In 2007 we won this prestigious award for our long-term community engagement programme in West Euston.
In 1984 we bought a large area of commercial property in Regent’s Place, West Euston, comprising high-quality offices, shops and leisure facilities. West Euston is a priority Neighbourhood Renewal area with deprivation and social exclusion. Our team recognised the importance of engaging with the community and understanding local needs. From the 1990s we began to make real progress in building local relationships.
The support, including skills, ideas, space and financial contributions, we have provided to local initiatives has benefited the following community organisations:
- The West Euston Partnership (WEP), which is a neighbourhood partnership of local stakeholders from the public, private and voluntary sectors that works with the community to make the area a better place to live and work.
- The Diorama Arts Centre, a hub for people living and working locally, with a gallery, studio, meeting and rehearsal rooms and media production facilities.
- The Third Age Project, a multi-cultural centre which offers a range of activities for local people over the age of fifty, such as pottery and tai chi.
- The WEP One Stop Shop, which provides a range of employment and training services.
- The West Euston Community Festival which is attended by 2,000 local people each year.
- Local schools for instance reading support at Netley Primary School and creative projects at South Camden Community School (SCCS).
As well as this:
- Community consultation means that local people have provided input into local development and plans include features they want, such as a community theatre and new public spaces.
- Our cultural events programme in Triton Square have been attended by local residents, occupiers’ employees, school children, our employees and other visitors.
- We have encouraged sustainable travel to Regent’s Place, with a Travel Plan in place since 2001. Between 2000 and 2003 cycling to work increased by 50% and car use halved.
- In 2003 we invested in improving Regent’s Place, creating a public square and providing public artworks.
- Since 2004 we have been involved in a major project to develop the area above the Euston Road underpass as part of the London Mayor’s 100 Public Spaces Programme.
This community engagement has also brought benefits to our business building relationships with local people, occupiers and other key stakeholders, which enhances our valuable reputation.
