Life at British Land

To deliver our corporate strategy we need to attract and retain the best people, whose efforts, skill and judgement we can leverage across our extensive portfolio.

We believe that staff engagement is a major competitive advantage and that engaged employees help us deliver a differentiated and high level performance. British Land ranks in the top five FTSE100 companies for reporting wellness and engagement of employees.

We demand the highest standards of ethical behaviour throughout our business and supply chain, working with our staff and suppliers to address environmental and social issues.

Our culture reflects how we work as a business. As a company with a relatively small head office team, all our employees are encouraged to get involved and take responsibility. It’s a friendly and open environment, one that supports an entrepreneurial approach and people who want to make things happen and make a difference.

Informed by feedback from the 2013 survey, we increased training opportunities and the social committee introduced a wider variety of social events. We also held a series of focus groups to get staff feedback on opportunities to support gender diversity.

We have a programme of formal and informal staff activities including team-building initiatives, such as British Land’s first Community Week in 2013, monthly all-staff meetings, annual company conferences and ad-hoc events with smaller groups. We also have a staff social committee which organises a series of regular events throughout the year, including theatre trips, Urban Golf, quizzes and even perfume making!

At British Land, salary is just one aspect of our employee’s reward package - they also have access to a whole range of great benefits.

The total reward package comprises of discretionary bonus, save as you earn scheme, share incentive plan, pension scheme, medical insurance, life assurance, subsidised gym membership, interest-free season ticket loans and childcare vouchers.

We offer all staff two days of paid leave each year for volunteering and £750 of match funding for fundraising. We also provide 50% match funding for all staff payroll giving contributions, up to £5,000 per person per year. More detail can be found within the Responsibility section.

Training and development

To help people to make the most of their potential with us, we provide appropriate support and training for all our employees. We formally assess training needs as part of the appraisal process, which also includes a 360° feedback process and informs the personal development plans for each member of staff.

Our human resources team members and other appropriate members of our Head Office team provide all new staff with an induction. This includes an introduction to our approach to corporate responsibility. We hold monthly all-staff briefings covering a range of topics, including corporate responsibility.

This year we introduced a series of workshops specifically aimed at helping employees understand how to grow and develop their own careers which have been well attended. We are also establishing a partnership with an award winning provider of training solutions, and have created a new Learning & Development site so our people have easy access to a full range of solutions to grow and build their capability.
